When Executive Chef Tanner Marino at Village kitchen needs arugula for his seasonal flatbread, there are some growing in the property’s garden that he can cut and use. Talk about farm to table, right? And that’s just the start of where Village Kitchen and the property it sits on, Hartness Village, want to go with the fresh, local concept of casual luxury dining. I’ve tasted several dishes and I’m here to tell you about this hidden restaurant that serves really delicious food.

The restaurant only opened a little over a year ago and is a counter service establishment with huge windows letting in plenty of natural light with plenty of farmhouse tables to sit at indoors and comfortable chairs and tables for outdoor dining.
General managers tell me that brunch at the Village Kitchen is their busiest time. After taking a look at the menuwhich includes Chicken and Waffles, Biscuits and Gravy, Chorizo Hash and Society Street Burger, it’s not hard to see why customers line up for great food.
Chef Tanner has been at the Village Kitchen since the beginning and brings his many years of expertise to the menu, which changes seasonally to include all the abundant produce that is ripe. That means watermelon radish matchsticks on salads in the spring and squash and tomato platters in the summer. Winter and fall bring pumpkin, kale, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, all carefully prepared and locally sourced.
The view of the garden
The Village Kitchen currently has its own garden, which will soon be moved to an even larger space on the Hartness property for more planting. They also source from several farms in the area like Bio Way Farms, Mill Village Farms, Upstate Greens, Noonday Farm, and Tyger River Smart Farm.
Hartness Living owns 449 acres which they are turning into a nature preserve with miles of trails, ponds and lakes for water sports, a beautiful hotel – Hotel Hartness – with a spa and a property focused on community gathering spaces and urban life. The Village Kitchen is a true extension of this vision, incorporating aspects of community living and sustainability. In the near future, the open green space next to the restaurant will be fenced and will have outdoor games to encourage families and individuals to enjoy the space together.
To the food! Lunch and dinner menu stays the same, while the brunch menu and menus for special occasions like Easter or Mother’s Day change a bit. But the concept of fresh, local and seasonal ingredients remains constant.
An important aspect to note is that the Village Kitchen offers dairy-free, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options.
We tried the Spring Harvest Salad, which includes Tyger River lettuces, fire roasted asparagus, radishes, goat cheese, raspberries, pistachios and truffle vinaigrette. It was exceptional. The flavors were all complementary and so delicious.
We had two of the flatbreads – the Fig & Pig with chives, goat cheese, figs, prosciutto, parmesan, arugula and a red wine reduction, and the Mediterranean, which had roasted garlic and caramelized onions, artichokes, mushrooms, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, mozzarella, peppadew jam and balsamic reduction. While both were delicious, the Fig & Pig won my heart. The figs and prosciutto did it for me.
Finally, we also tried the Village Kitchen Club, a sandwich with turkey, smoked ham, bacon, cheddar, swiss, herb mayo, bibb lettuce and roma tomatoes. I’ve barely tasted this sandwich since my kids dived into it like they haven’t eaten in a day. The combination of smoked ham and bacon put this sandwich on top for me. The flavors were amazing.
Chef Tanner also brought us fries and tater tots, which were also a hit – perfectly crispy and flavorful.
It was a delicious lunch, made even better because my two children absolutely loved the dishes and when asked if they would have preferred the grilled cheese to what Chef Michael brought to us, both said with enthusiasm that the lunch was fantastic and even better than grilled cheese.
The Village Kitchen offers a children’s menu if you prefer not to try new flavors with your children.
They also serve coffee, beer, wine, iced tea, and chocolate milk.
Hartness Living hosts several special events where the public is more than welcome to see what the community is all about. They have Cool Fridays the second Friday in May and June, which will feature local vendors, lots of activities for kids, outdoor games, music and entertainment.

The Village Kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Sunday brunch.
You can also order food to take away. They are located at the corner of Highway 14 and Roper Mountain Road.
