Vegetable garden training empowering unskilled women | Morung Express


The beneficiaries participate in the practical demonstration of the creation of raised beds for vegetable gardens.

Dimapur, November 7 (MExN): The SBI Foundation of the Association for Integrated Development of ANMA (AIDA) – Gram Seva Program organized an awareness and training program on vegetable garden activities. During the program which aimed to empower unskilled women with hands-on demonstration, the team also distributed green mosquito nets to all adopted villages i.e. Urra, Baden, Diezephe and Tsithrongse villages. .

SBI Gram Seva-AIDA in a press release said that the objective of the awareness and training program was to provide skilled means to ensure economic growth of unskilled women. A total of 55 beneficiaries received training on best organic farming practices in order to increase their livelihood income by promoting vegetable garden practices.

SBI Gram Seva-AIDA provides financial assistance to 37 beneficiaries for the purchase of seasonal vegetable seeds, manure, tying fences / bamboo fences. 18 beneficiaries received green nets from the project to protect vegetables / plants from unwanted encroachment by domestic animals.

The resource person, Pfokho John, project manager, underlined the importance of organic farming and the high demand for the products in the market. A documentation video was shown to beneficiaries during the sensitization training for further knowledge inputs.

The next session consisting of a practical demonstration took place in the vegetable garden. Land preparation methods – initiated by livelihood manager, KT Khino Anal, were demonstrated and beneficiaries learned how to use spades to dig the soil / mud and raise the level of seedbeds from the level of the ground. Other aspects such as the level of spacing, removing stones, bushes and weeds, making compost pits with weeds, backyard twigs, etc., to be used as fertilizer organic, and the manufacture of seedbeds, etc. have also been demonstrated.

The sensitization and training session was successful as beneficiaries shared their perspective that the vegetable garden has never been more valuable as it includes green vegetables and fruit trees, the statement said. It also increases household access to fresh food on the table and promotes a stable income in the family. Beneficiaries were enlightened by new ideas on how to make vegetable gardens at home by adopting the best scientific practices, he added.
