Tried the food at the new PAL Bar & Kitchen – and it was amazing

PAL Bar & Kitchen occupies pride of place on Abbeygate in Grimsby and officially opened to the public last December.

Specializing in more indulgent tapas plates and bespoke cocktails, the restaurant offers something a little different to locals.

At the time of opening, general manager Lewis Parry told Grimsby Live that the menu “will constantly change and evolve”.

He said: “People can expect a relaxed atmosphere and an ever-changing menu. We work with locally sourced ingredients, homegrown and homegrown produce and what’s available in season.

“The philosophy behind PAL is all about sustainability and showcasing local produce, but our number one goal will always be to provide our customers with an amazing experience.

“The food will be in the form of small plates, so you will order a few dishes to share between your group. Again, it works with fresh, seasonal food, so we really try to highlight the quality of what is at our layout and it really shines through the food menu.

“We are very lucky to have amazing chefs and every thing on the menu is truly awesome!”

Needless to say I was looking forward to going there and trying the food for myself – especially since they are currently offering 3 for 2 on all small plates from 5-8:30pm, Tuesday-Thursday.

From inside, the restaurant is chic and sophisticated in its decor, with warm, rustic elements like the wooden tables and beams, complemented by hanging plants dotted throughout.

It felt like a really upscale restaurant, without the exorbitant price and effort – which I loved.

Here is what we ordered:

  • Sticky Chicken Tenders – with BBQ Glaze, Sour Cream & Chives (£6.00)
  • Pulled Duck Salad – with kimchi pak choy, pickled cucumber and sweet pear vinaigrette (£7.25)
  • Pulled Pork Bon Bon – with Roasted Tomato Chutney (£6.50)
  • Pork prawns – with grilled and seared jumbo prawns in pork suet, pancetta and lemon vinegar (£7.25)
  • Maple Chilli Cauliflower Wings – with Lime Garlic Ranch (£4.00)
  • Homemade flatbreads with dips

What I love about small plates is that you can choose what you eat and enjoy a range of tastes, cuisines and cooking styles without being limited to one type of food, so I knew that I would probably be a huge PAL fan before I even tried the food!

But I was really sold as soon as I tried any of the Sticky Chicken Tenders, and it only got better from there.

Everything was very well cooked and the presentation was impeccable.

For me, the star(s) of the show had to be the chicken tenderloins and the pulled pork candy, which Lewis, the general manager, told me was the best item on the menu.

But surprisingly, I think my favorite plate was the maple chilli cauliflower wings.

I’m a big meat eater so I’m shocked to say that this was one of the vegetarian plates that took the top spot.

They definitely had a spicy “kick” – so those who don’t take spice well might disagree with me on this one – but I was a huge fan.

If they were slightly spicier, I don’t think I could have handled them, but I felt the “kick” was just right.

My only criticism is that I felt the pancetta on the pig prawn dish was slightly too salty for my taste (but the prawns themselves were delicious) – and in the future I don’t think I would choose again shredded duck salad.

But if I had to rate the place on a scale of one to ten, that would be a solid 8.5 from me.

My opinion on PAL Bar & Kitchen? It’s so good to see places like this that offer something a little different when relocating to Grimsby, and I will definitely be returning. It’s modern, stylish, and comfortable, and the food is amazing.
