The family tea and coffee business that ‘started from the kitchen table’ now flies the Lincolnshire flag around the world

A Lincolnshire tea and coffee company that ‘started from the kitchen table’ has moved into bigger premises to help it ship its products around the world.

The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company started in 2013 as a passion project by Susie and John Carlisle, now in their late 40s, with the goal of creating great tasting tea and coffee.

It has now grown and sells its products worldwide, including wholesale with great hospitality companies through Lincolnshire.

Mr Carlisle said: “It really started from the kitchen table, moving into some offices that we already had, and moving into another building that we passed.

“We now have a building with a bespoke tea packing area, forklifts and lots of desks in the office, so that’s a whole different thing.

“We were really packed where we were, so now we have room to grow and develop in the future.”

One of the products, Lincolnshire Tea, is a special blend of teas designed to be steeped in Lincolnshire water.

Mr. Carlisle said: “We launched a product called Lincolnshire Tea in 2017 and are now at four million cups served.

“He goes all over the world and flies the Lincolnshire flag, which is lovely.

“We were initially looking for good quality tea and coffee which we were struggling to find to enjoy at home.”

Mr Carlisle said he and his wife did not intend to sell the products wholesale, but quickly started receiving inquiries after attending a few local food shows.

He said: “I’m a huge coffee lover and Susie grew up loving tea and it’s always been an important part of life at home.

“We would go to the supermarket and buy tea or coffee, but you would try it and think it wasn’t as pleasant as you hoped.

“We thought we couldn’t be the only ones feeling this, so we created our own brands that we love.”

The couple have two children, the eldest being 21, and Mr Carlisle said they were ‘almost ready to move in and fly into the nest’, in a marked change from when the business launched there almost ten years old.

He added: “We’re a strong team now, it’s not just the two of us anymore.”
