Table Dressing 101: How to Create Your Dream Party Decor

Define a theme

“When hosting, create an attractive table setting. Let it exude an air of theater and anticipation as guests wait for their meal. The setting provides a visual feast, while the scent of the food helps to enhance the atmosphere. Here, the illustrations of the artist Nathalie Rolland-Huckel on the Hermès tableware inspired my staging on the theme of the jungle.

Launched at Maison&Objet 2020, the Passifolia tableware collection by Hermès includes 30 gold-rimmed pieces in Limoges porcelain.

Dress for the occasion

“For a formal dinner, opt for elegant dinnerware in a sparse palette with metallic accents. A minimalist setting with woven leather placemats looks refined. For festive events, maximalist tablescapes like this help create the wow factor. To avoid going OTT, I’ve alternated busy pieces overflowing with orchids, anthuriums, and birds of paradise with sparse pieces (with a single leaf) that provide visual relief.

create drama

“While fruits and vegetables are easy ways to add color and contrast to the table, make sure they’re cleverly and securely fastened. You don’t want things slipping around or creating unintended distractions Instead of placemats I used large monstera leaves to keep the nature theme strong, I also added bird artifacts for effect.

Attention to detail

“Make sure that no decorations (like a candelabra) are so tall that guests can’t easily see or talk to each other. When picking flowers, go for ones like peonies and roses that don’t trigger no allergies or who have really heady odors which could interfere with those of the dishes.
