Good day to you all ! Will it ever warm up for us? I am ready for the warm weather to work outside and prepare my beds for flowers and vegetables. The kitchen cupboard is still using the window for service until we are notified by the church that we can bring customers in.

Our Board of Directors will next meet in May. At our March meeting, we talked about year-end reporting and whether there will be a Stamp Out Hunger campaign this year. We haven’t spoken to Kay at the post office yet, but we will in the next few weeks.

Another item we will be discussing at our May meeting is the “Party in the Park” series in the summer. We set up a table and sell additional raffle tickets with either food or $1 per ticket. It all goes to our Oelwein kitchen cabinet. We always appreciate this opportunity to have a good time while receiving donations of food and money. We have been informed that there will be a party in the park this year and are looking forward to a great time while receiving some money for the closet.

Have you seen the Fareway Purple Bag video? It’s on the Oelwein Kitchen Cupboard Facebook page. Like our page to see new posts posted from time to time. Marti Rosenstiel and Josh Ehn did an amazing job making this video. The purple Kitchen Cupboard food bags have been a blessing to the Cupboard, and we once again thank Marti Rosenstiel, who came up with the idea, and the Fareway employees who continue to fill the bags and make them available for purchase. . Churches are given a list of items to donate to the closet, but the purple bags have really helped during the COVID pandemic. Fareway’s purple bags are such an easy way to donate to the closet in this time of need. We would like to thank Fareway customers for purchasing these bags. We now also have the purple bags at Dollar Fresh and appreciate Dollar Fresh customers buying these closet bags.

The Kitchen Cupboard would like to thank Matt Nelson of Dollar Fresh and Paul Schemmel of Fareway for all the items they donate to The Cupboard for our customers. Carol and Nancy picked up items on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Our customers really enjoy the items every time they stop by.

The following churches are members of our board of trustees and are invited to collect the following items during the months of April and May 2022: Christ United Presbyterian Church: 12 oz. packet egg noodles; First Baptist Church: small boxes of butterscotch instant pudding; Maynard First Presbyterian Church: muffin mixes (no cornmeal); Grace United Methodist Church: 5 oz. canned tuna; Church of the Sacred Heart: April — 24 oz. Spaghetti Sauce Tins, May – 5 oz. fruit cocktail cans: and Zion Lutheran Church: flavored rice mixes (such as Knorr-Lipton side dishes). If you can’t make it to church, you can put your things in the kitchen cupboard on Tuesday morning and Friday afternoon.

Finally, I want to thank all of my amazing volunteers during the last COVID-19 pandemic. Doing the drive-up service for customers worked very well, so we only have the manager, volunteers and storekeepers in the closet. My volunteers help me a lot by helping customers choose their food, stocking the shelves and organizing both the customer shopping room as well as our storage room, and sorting, counting and storing food donations. We have a great team of truckers who help us when we make a large food purchase, and they always know what needs to be done and they do it quickly and efficiently.

The community kitchen closet is on the lower level of First Baptist Church at 31 First Ave. NE (across the highway from the post office). The Kitchen Cupboard is open Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Kitchen Cupboard is closed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you need to reach us by phone, remember that there is no answering machine for this phone and will only be answered during business hours, and the number to reach us is 319- 283-3595.
