Voices4Cowper (V4C) has called for an independent candidate to run for Cowper’s seat in the next federal election. V4C is a community-based, volunteer-run organization committed to involving the community in the political process. With the current focus on the roles played by independent candidates in the upcoming federal election, the group is facilitating a process of finding a candidate to represent the electorate by focusing on the issues raised in its recent report. Over the past two years, V4C has hosted a series of kitchen table conversations and asked locals what is most important to them. Over 250 people shared important ideas and issues in 49 kitchen table-style conversations across Cowper’s electorate. Topics covered life in Cowper, political engagement and representation, and the most important issues beyond Cowper of greatest concern. The report’s release is the result of two and a half years of working to establish the organization, set up the process for kitchen table conversations, listen to the community, and bring participants’ issues and concerns together. At the top of the list was climate change and environmental protection. Inequality in our society and political culture were other issues that many participants noted as needing to be addressed. The report was released on November 14. “The challenge now is to find a candidate willing to run for the seat and stand on the following key issues raised in the report: climate and environment, political integrity and social inequalities,” Gillian Anderson, V4C coordinator. noted. The deadline for submitting applications via the website is Sunday January 23 at 5:00 p.m., after which each profile will be published. V4C will then host an online public meeting on Sunday February 6 to allow Cowper residents to vote for the candidate who best represents them. “It is important to note that V4C will support the successful candidate, but will not participate in their individual election campaign,” Ms. Anderson said. “After all, it is democracy, and we are all in the same boat.” Our reporters work hard to provide local and up-to-date news to the community.
