Minecraft has different types of light sources aside from the standard sky light. Light is a crucial aspect of the game as it affects different mob spawns and crop growth. If players properly light their surroundings, they will prevent hostile mobs from spawning and provide a pleasant ambiance to the area.

Although most beginners use simple torches to light up any area, they can also craft different blocks which look much nicer. These glow blocks not only illuminate an area, but also act as decorative pieces, enhancing the beauty of a structure or area. Some of them even have special abilities and unique shapes.

Jack O’ Lantern is a special block that players can craft themselves by cutting a pumpkin with shears and combining it with a torch on the crafting table. After shearing the pumpkin block, a scary face will appear on one of the sides. When placed, this block will have 15 levels of light, which is the highest in the game.

It’s the perfect block to light up a Halloween themed structure and other spooky builds.

4) Marine Lantern

Sea lanterns are another great light-emitting decoration block that players can use instead of standard torches. These are a bit tricky to get as they can be mined with a silk-touch enchanted tool or crafted with prismarine crystals and shards.

Players can use them in underwater builds as they are more suitable for use in water. They also emit 15 levels of light, which can light up multiple blocks easily.

3) Redstone Lamp

As their name suggests, these glowing blocks are powered by redstone. Therefore, they can only light up if a redstone signal passes through them. While this makes them harder to use, players can create contraptions that automatically turn them off when a light isn’t needed.

For example, these lamps can be used with a daylight sensor block that detects day-night cycles. Whenever night begins, these blocks will automatically light up and vice versa.

2) Candles

Candles were added to the game in Part 1 of the 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update. They can be made with honeycomb and string and colored with different dyes. From one to four candles can be placed on a single block. They can even be placed on a cake.

Each candle emits three levels of light; therefore, they are not an ideal light source to protect an area from spawning. However, they are excellent for decorating almost anything.

1) Lantern

If players want a simple torch upgrade, they can craft lanterns. These small light-emitting blocks can be crafted with a torch and eight iron nuggets. Soul Lanterns can also be crafted with Soul Torches. They can be placed above a block or hung below.

Due to its easy crafting recipe and beautiful appearance, a lantern is considered the best and most common light source that players can use to decorate anything in the game.
